County Poor Farm. [ca. 1918].

Views of what was originally the Chambers homestead on 63rd Street, north of Valmont. It became the County Poor Farm from 1902 to 1918. In one view, the two-story dormitory addition is visible to the right of the house. This was torn down ca. 1920 by Paul Hummel, father of Mary Hummel Wells, the owner in 1990.

Paul H. Hummel, a rancher in Boulder County, Colorado, was born in Kansas in 1888. Hummel purchased property in Boulder County in 1920 that would become his Valmont Farms and Cattle Company. Soon after, he expanded his operation to include feeder cows. In 1933 he purchased range cattle and in that year began grazing them on Forest Service lands in the Roosevelt National Forest.
